One scholarship may be given to a senior from each of the high schools.
History
In 1978, Mrs. Eula Miller, President of the Durham County Schools Citizens Advisory Committees Association met with school administrators and parents to establish a scholarship for students of middle income families. In 1993, the name was changed to Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation to reflect the unity of the former city and county school systems. Foundation Scholarship applications are available to seniors in all of the Senior High Schools.
General Information
The Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation will award at least one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior in each senior high school in the Durham Public Schools System. These scholarships are open to graduating seniors who expect to enroll in a post-secondary institution next fall and meet the eligibility criteria.
The Scholarship Foundation Selection Committee will evaluate each applicant. The Committee will assess financial need based on family income, number of dependents and unusual circumstances.
Eligibility Criteria
The Durham Public Schools Scholarship Selection Committee will select recipients based on the following criteria:
- The Financial Aid Form (FAF) or Free Financial Aid Statement (FAFSA) must show family income between $40,000 and $75,000 per year. Unusual circumstances will be considered.
- High School Records and test scores.
- Leadership and participation (service) in school and community activities.
- Citizenship responsibility in the school and community.
- Growth potential and future promises.
- Student must have already submitted an application to the institution(s) of their choice.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- An interview at the request of the Selection CommitteeTop
Carlton G. Miles Memorial Scholarship
History
Mrs. Marion Miles established the Carlton G. Miles Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2009, in loving memory of her son. Mr. Carlton Miles worked with the "An Evening of Entertainment" for twenty-six years as its Musical Director. He also directed the acclaimed DPS Spotlight Singers and was a Choral Director at Hillside Hill School. He was a generous, talented and gentle man who endeavored to instill in his students a love of performance and a desire to continue their musical pursuits.
General Information
The scholarship is to be awarded to a senior planning to pursue a career in music or music education.. The amount of scholarship will be $1,000. No student can qualify for more than one scholarship from the Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation. Top
Della Bradsher Hedgepeth Memorial Scholarship
History
Mr. W. L. Bradsher Jr. established the Della Bradsher Hedgepeth Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1984, in memory of his mother. The scholarship is to be awarded to a female senior at Hillside High. The amount of scholarship money may vary from year to year but will not be less than $500 nor greater than $1,000.
General Information
Hillside High School female senior students who have been recommended by a teacher may apply for this special scholarship. She must meet the eligibility criteria established by the benefactor of this scholarship. No student can qualify for more than one scholarship from the Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation.

Rachel Lawrence Scholarship
History
In 1993, the Rachel Lawrence Scholarship fund was established in honor of Rachel’s many years of service in the promotion of parent involvement. The scholarship is to be awarded to one senior in the Durham Public Schools System.
General Information
Graduating seniors in each senior high school in the Durham Public Schools System may apply for this special $1,000 scholarship. The Rachel Lawrence Scholarship is for students who have demonstrated leadership and service in their school and community.

Kayla P. Radack Endowed Scholarship
History
In 2004, Pat and Amy Radack established the Kayla P. Radack Endowed Scholarship in memory of their daughter. Through this scholarship, they hope to help many future female students fulfill their dreams and promise.
General Information
Graduating female seniors at Riverside High School may apply for this special $1,000 scholarship. The Kayla P. Radack Endowed Scholarship is for students who have demonstrated academic and leadership qualities.

John T. Smith Memorial Scholarship
History
In 1988, former Southern High School students established the John T. Smith Memorial Scholarship to honor the impact that he made in the lives of his students.
General Information
Graduating seniors at Southern High School may apply for this special $1,000 scholarship. The John T. Smith Memorial Scholarship is for students who have demonstrated academic and leadership qualities.
The Scholarship Foundation Selection Committee will evaluate each applicant. The Committee will assess financial need based on family income, number of dependents and unusual circumstances. Baxter and Beth Teasley Scholarship
Established in the fall of 2006 by Alan B. Teasley in loving memory of his parents.
This $1,000 scholarship is for a student who is the first in his/her immediate family to attend an accredited college or university.
**City of Medicine Academy Scholarship
In 2009 the City of Medicine Academy Scholarship was established from a grant from the Durham Chamber of Commerce for seniors graduating from the Academy. To be eligible to receive the scholarship, the student applicant must:
- Be a graduating senior of City of Medicine Academy
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.75 for all high school work attempted through the fall semester
- Have been accepted into an accredited college (i.e., two-year, four-year or community college) or university and financial need
The student applicant must have demonstrated during his/her high school career, qualities of scholarship, integrity, character, leadership and strong community service. The selection will be based on an interview of the finalists conducted by the Selection Committee.
One (1) scholarship of $1000 and one (1) $500 scholarships will be awarded to a graduating senior from City of Medicine Academy which meets the criteria.
Judy Clark Scholarship
Established in 2006 by her family in memory of her many years of service as a teacher and counselor.
This $1,000 scholarship is for a Northern High School student who has demonstrated during his/her high school career qualities of scholarship, integrity, character, and leadership. Overall GPA of 3.0 and have been accepted into an accredited college or university or community college
